You should take a guide as they can tell you things that you wouldn't find out otherwise; they charge 15$ for 2 and a half hours but may only take groups of maximum 15. There is a possibility to watch the spectacular sunrise over the Andes, before 6 am if you talk to the guards. Also, after 3 pm you can visit the ruins in peace and quiet but don't stay too late because the last bus is at 5.30.Try to avoid going there on Mondays or Fridays because there are lots of people on guided tours.
