I chose one of the cheapest hostels in town: Albergue Juvenil Virgen de Copacabana (it's on Llave 228). I stayed in a pretty large room, well-furnished. There was hot water but the bathroom wasn't that great. But it's nicely situated and it's quiet. You can buy a good breakfast for only $1.30. You can get a place for $3 to $6.
